UCLA professor still missing

Colleagues of Philip Agre, associate professor of information sciences at the University of California at Los Angeles, are using Twitter and Facebook to find him, according to a report in “The Chronicle of Higher Education.” Agre, 49, vanished from campus earlier this year. Last month, his sister filed a missing person alert, also according to “The Chronicle.” Agre was a “private person,” colleagues and friends said, but he ran a very popular technology e-mail newsletter, which had thousands of subscribers. “In his personal life, he never wanted to discuss social things,” Charlotte Lee, another UCLA professor, told “The Chronicle.” “When his behavior got more erratic, nobody felt close enough to him to help, and we thought we’d help by protecting his zone of privacy.” Instead, Agre, who is said to suffer from manic depression, “slipped away,” said Lee, who now has set up a Web site in hopes to locate him.

About a week after “Inside Higher Ed” reported Suzanne E. Thorin, dean of libraries at Syracuse University, said that libraries, as we know them today, are dying, students and faculty protested Syracuse’s attempt to move books to an off-campus storage site. “Let’s face it: the library, as a place, is dead,” Thorin had said. “Kaput. Finito.
