How to choose a Study Abroad program

It’s almost like choosing a college: Choosing a study abroad program is a decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Afterall, you’ll be in a faraway country, unable to hop in your car and drive home at the first sign of homesickness. So, there’s a lot to factor in when you make your decision, including the type of program, location and length of the program. You’ll want to choose a destination that you are very interested in, and one that can provide you with a challenging cultural experience, according to “The Princeton Review.” Another factor to consider: Do you speak the language? Do they speak English? Communicating, obviously, is important. You may want to talk to other students who have studied abroad in the country. How was their experience? Would they do it again if they had the opportunity? What advice do they have to offer? And, then, get ready to travel.

The college visit can make or break your first, second and third choices – so make sure you visit all of your options. Among them is to make sure you are visiting the college while classes are in session – that is if you want a realistic look at college life. You do. Secondly, you should make sure to talk to students. Do they love their school? Why or not? You also should talk to the admissions office, as well as take the campus tour. In fact, “The Chronicle of Higher Education” finds that there are a lot of adjuncts professors across the country, teaching part-time and receiving little pay and no health benefits. The Chronicle wanted to find out why these adjuncts keep coming back. According to The Chronicle’s survey of more than 600 adjunct professors at 90 higher education institutions throughout Chicago found that many come day in and day out for the love of the job. It’s definitely not the pay: On average, many make an annual salary of $20,000 or less. Some, The Chronicle found, stick it out because they have dreams of landing a tenure-track, full-time position. But find it tough to get, especially because many adjuncts do not have their PhD degrees. One adjunct said, “Seeing the students that come (here) ready to learn and overcome their circumstances – it’s inspiring.”
