Think a college is for you? Visit first.

Sure, it’s your first choice – on paper. But don’t make your mind up until you’ve visited the college campus. According to “The Princeton Review,” the college visit is one of the most important deciding factors in where you’ll attend school. The college visit can make or break your first, second and third choices – so make sure you visit all of your options. The Review recommends some tips to take into consideration when you are planning your college visit. Among them is to make sure you are visiting the college while classes are in session – that is if you want a realistic look at college life. You do. Secondly, you should make sure to talk to students. Do they love their school? Why or not? You also should talk to the admissions office, as well as take the campus tour. Then go out on your own by day … and by night.

How many adjunct professors do you have? Chances are – a lot. In fact, “The Chronicle of Higher Education” finds that there are a lot of adjuncts professors across the country, teaching part-time and receiving little pay and no health benefits. The Chronicle wanted to find out why these adjuncts keep coming back. According to The Chronicle’s survey of more than 600 adjunct professors at 90 higher education institutions throughout Chicago found that many come day in and day out for the love of the job. It’s definitely not the pay: On average, many make an annual salary of $20,000 or less. Some, The Chronicle found, stick it out because they have dreams of landing a tenure-track, full-time position. But find it tough to get, especially because many adjuncts do not have their PhD degrees. One adjunct said, “Seeing the students that come (here) ready to learn and overcome their circumstances – it’s inspiring.”

GIs wait for college money

“The Chronicle of Higher Education” is reporting more than a third of veterans who served in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars still haven’t received their money for college under the GI Bill. So, what’s the hold up? Apparently, technology. Go figure. The Chronicle states that Veterans Affairs’ officials are behind in inputting the GI’s claims. Colleges across the nation have jumped on board with a new provision to the GI Bill, called The Yellow Ribbon Program. The program funds tuition expenses that exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rates. Colleges can contribute up to 50 percent of those expenses, and the VA will match this additional funding for eligible students. The Post-9/11 GI Bill is the most extensive educational assistance program approved since the original GI Bill was signed into law in 1944. To find out more about The Yellow Ribbon Program, visit the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

How safe is your college campus?

Sure, we all want to feel safe. And, as a result, we might just choose to believe our college campus is safe and a safe place to be – even while walking home alone at 2 in the morning. But really how safe are our college campuses? According to “The Princeton Review,” there are some ways you can find out if your college campus is safe. Colleges are required to compile statistics each year about campus safety. Colleges also have to make these statistics available to students and staff at the school. But where do you find these stats? The admission’s office should provide you with this information. Also according to the Review, you can check out the U.S. Department of Education’s Web site, which provides information on crime statistics for public colleges and universities. You also can check out “Security On Campus,” which is a national non-profit organization.
