Well, Twitter is helping to change all that. At Purdue University, Professor Sugato Chakravarty is using Twitter in his classes, which boast 250 students, to change the face of teaching, reports “The Chronicle of Higher Education.” It works like this: Chakravarity asks his students to post questions on Twitter during class. Students, in turn, post questions on Twitter, which are answered during class. The idea, experts report, is to engage students, especially in very large classes by putting them in the driver’s seat. “I would never ask a question out loud to the professor,” Purdue student, Ben Van Wye, told “The Chronicle.” “But you can type it in as anonymous, so nobody really knows if what you’re asking is a dumb question.”

UCLA professor still missing

Colleagues of Philip Agre, associate professor of information sciences at the University of California at Los Angeles, are using Twitter and Facebook to find him, according to a report in “The Chronicle of Higher Education.” Agre, 49, vanished from campus earlier this year. Last month, his sister filed a missing person alert, also according to “The Chronicle.” Agre was a “private person,” colleagues and friends said, but he ran a very popular technology e-mail newsletter, which had thousands of subscribers. “In his personal life, he never wanted to discuss social things,” Charlotte Lee, another UCLA professor, told “The Chronicle.” “When his behavior got more erratic, nobody felt close enough to him to help, and we thought we’d help by protecting his zone of privacy.” Instead, Agre, who is said to suffer from manic depression, “slipped away,” said Lee, who now has set up a Web site in hopes to locate him.

Standing up for the books at Syracuse University

About a week after “Inside Higher Ed” reported Suzanne E. Thorin, dean of libraries at Syracuse University, said that libraries, as we know them today, are dying, students and faculty protested Syracuse’s attempt to move books to an off-campus storage site. “Let’s face it: the library, as a place, is dead,” Thorin had said. “Kaput. Finito. And we need to move on to a new concept of what the academic library is.” While many libraries at major universities across the country are moving books to off-campus storage sites stating students aren’t looking for hard copies (they want it digital), Syracuse students may be proving them wrong. Students protested the move and faculty signed petitions to keep the books in the stacks and on the shelves at Syracuse, according to “Inisde Higher Ed.” But it comes down to money, Thorin said. And libraries across the country are finding themselves in similar situations.
